Details: Due to the general economic and industry environment in 2009, Newsome's base salary remained unadjusted at $900,000. But even amid such conditions, Health Management Associates' net revenue grew by nearly 6 percent to $4.6 billion compared to 2008. According to SEC filings, this stemmed from increased admissions and emergency room visits (up 2.9 percent and 5.5 percent, respectively), favorable case mix trends and improvements in rei

mbursement rates.

Compensation: Newsome enjoyed a guaranteed cash bonus of $1 million for 2009, on behalf of his "continued employments as president and chief executive officer" of the Naples, Fla.-based hospital system, said the SEC. In addition, he received stock awards totaling $1,320,000.

Newsome's "other compensation" accounted for usage of the company car and aircraft ($18,621 and $132,675, respectively), membership fees ($3,000), health insurance ($5,755) and life insurance ($2,622). Newsome also received $3,916 to compensate for relocation expenses and a related tax gross up payment.
