Highlights:

• Humana reported total revenues of $7.7 billion in the third quarter of 2009, up 8 percent from $7.14 billion last year at this time.
• Net earnings per share for Q3 2009 were up $.69 per share from Q3 2008 to $1.78 per share, a 63 percent jump.
• Overall net income totaled $301.5 million for Q3 2009, compared with $183 million last year at this time, an increase of nearly 65 percent.
• According to the Wall Street Journal, Humana's increased earnings were due mainly to demand for Medicare Advantage products. Regardless, Humana expects its 2010 earnings to be between $5.05 and $5.25 per share, a decrease from this year's goal of $6.15 per share; cuts to Medicare reimbursements are expected to play a significant role.
