A look at the post-reform future for non-profit hospitals
Comments
If under Health Care Reform, virtually all Americans have health insurance, how do non-profits "earn" their keep -- charity/uncompensated care will no longer exist, so there is no reason to shield them from the tax man. Many policymakers are already skeptical that the charitable services they provide meet or exceed the tax benefits they enjoy -- with more people with mandated health insurance, the need for charity care would seen to be a thing of the past.
Don't kid yourself -- mandated health insurance does not eliminate the need for charity care. Many patients with fairly good insurance can still end up with thousands of dollars owed out-of-pocket in a catastrophic situation, especially if their medical condition reduces their ability to work.
