Six Miami-area residents, including three doctors, were indicted last week on charges of conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud. The doctors were all part-owners of Midway Medical, a facility that claimed to be a clinic specializing in infusion and injection treatments for HIV-positive patients.

According to Healthcare Finance News, the three doctors ordered medically unnecessary tests and falsified medical records between September 2002 and June 2005. Medical assistants also made it look like some of those tests were necessary, with one even manipulating HIV-positive blood samples to obtain laboratory reports that showed patients had illnesses that they actually did not have.

But the criminal activity doesn't stop there. Four of the six also are charged with laundering more than $10,000 of the fraudulently obtained proceeds.
