Case study: MI hospitals to get $6.5M from stimulus, with conditions

Hospitals in Michigan who treat the state's 1.2 million uninsured people can expect to get a $6.5 million boost from the new federal economic stimulus plan in 2009, though a few conditions will be attached.

Before getting the funding, the hospitals will have to exhaust the 2009 Disproportionate Share Hospitals funding. A bigger catch, meanwhile, is that Michigan will only get the money as a match grant. In other words, it will only get as much of the stimulus funding as it is willing to supply from its own budget to treat the uninsured.

The funding should be a welcome help for facilities like Detroit Medical Center, which sees one of every four Medicaid patients in the state. About 20 percent of the patients treated at DMC's Detroit Receiving Hospital have no insurance.
