Nonprofit execs in Florida don't feel the pinch
Chief executives at nonprofit hospitals around Tampa Bay, Fla., fetch well above the national average in compensation, reports the St. Petersburg Times. Average CEO compensation at 14 nonprofit hospitals in the Tampa Bay area totaled roughly $876,000 compared to a national average of $490,000 according to a recent survey by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
Key total compensation packages for 2008 included:
- Isaac Mallah, St. Joseph's Hospital: $2.2 million;
- Steve Mason, BayCare Health System: $1.7 million;
- Ron Hytoff, Tampa General Hospital: $1.7 million;
- Gary Carnes, All Children's Hospital: $1.2 million;
- Sue Brody, Bayfront Medical Center: $744,149; and
- William Dalton, H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute: $1 million.
Hospital officials tell the Times that their boards follow IRS rules "meticulously" and hire independent consultants to ensure that executive salaries are in line with similar nonprofits.
In central New York, most hospital CEOs received pay raises in 2008, but their salaries appear to be more in line with IRS-reported national averages. According to federal tax records, chief executives at Syracuse's three largest nonprofit hospitals received more than $500,000 in salary, benefits and other compensation in 2008, says the Post-Standard.
