The Department of Veterans Affairs created the Veterans Choice program to send some patients to private sector providers to receive care and relieve the backlog in the VA healthcare system. But now those providers are not being paid, according to WFLA-TV.  The VA owes hospitals and providers in Florida at least $134 million. Altogether, nearly 30,000 claims have gone unpaid, some for more than a year. Health Net, the California-based commercial payer that administers the program, said in a statement that it is experiencing "growing pains" and suggested it is trying to accommodate a flow of claims that grew by 500 percent nationwide last year.
